Welcome to our Latest Intern
My name is Drew Gibbons and I’m studying a Bachelor of International Relations majoring in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland in Australia.
Currently I am undergoing a short internship with Edmund Rice International (ERI) in Geneva. I found out about ERI from my University College (St Leo’s) in Brisbane administered by the Christian Brothers, and applied towards the end of my second year hoping to come to Europe for the winter.
While I haven’t had any previous experience with Edmund Rice International, I decided to apply because I have a strong sense of social justice and equality and I’m interested in seeing how an NGO operates alongside the United Nations and to see first hand how advocacy and lobbying works. I hope to broaden my understanding of the different branches within the United Nations such as the Universal Periodic Review, Treaty Body Sessions and other dimensions that contribute to creating a more fair and equal world.
I have been here for about two weeks now and have already experienced a lot and have been able to contribute to ERI and UPR lobbying. I will return to Australia in March to start my final year of my undergraduate degree where my studies will focus on ethics, the great powers and policy making. I am unsure exactly of what I aim to do in 2015, whether it be a Diploma of languages, a Masters in International Development, field work or travel/volunteering. However, whatever I choose to do I know I will have this experience to help guide me in my own personal and professional development. I look forward to the next five weeks and what they have to offer.
